More Than 50% of Residents Leave Loudoun For Healthcare Now, Strong Growth is Projected in Next 10 Years
The Loudoun County Planning Department released its report on September 8th recommending that the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors approve the special exception application for Broadlands Regional Medical Center (BRMC). Highlights of the report include:
- BRMC is consistent with the land use policies of the Revised
General plan.
- BRMC will not generate more car trips than a by-right office park
which can be built up to 1,192,000 sq. feet without zoning approval.
- BRMC is consistent with the Countywide Health Care Facilities
policies.
- BRMC provides appropriate landscape buffers that substantially
screen the hospital from residences across Broadlands Blvd.
- Loudoun Hospital and the Cornwall Street Emergency Center are
located closer to residential units than BRMC will be.
- BRMC is the only proposed hospital that has a Certificate of Public
Need from the VA Health Commissioner.
The Planning Department staff is made up of non-partisan experts who review applications and negotiate conditions of approval to mitigate any potential impacts of projects and ensure compliance with zoning laws. The reports bottom line is that Broadlands IS the right location to build the next hospital in Loudoun.
"The proposed Broadlands Regional Medical Center complies with the service and location criteria given the regional nature of medical centers as specified in the County's adopted land use policies for health care facilities," the staff report reads. "Its location is central to the regional population and provides an additional choice of medical care services. While County policy states that consideration should be given for locating a full-service hospital near the Route 50 corridor, the County has now approved such a hospital facility on Route 50... Development of the facility at Broadlands does not preclude the County's consideration of other proposals for medical facilities in the Route 50 corridor, Leesburg or other underserved areas."
